SRT and VTT files pair transcript text with timing. They are useful when an Instagram Reel needs editable subtitles, accessible captions, or a timed script for another video workflow.
Create the timed transcript
Open the Instagram Transcript generator, paste a public Reel or video-post URL, and start transcription. The result is returned as segments with start and end times. Those timings become the cues in the exported subtitle file.
The source must be public. Private accounts, login walls, deleted posts, and unsupported URLs cannot be processed. Current duration limits are 120 seconds for anonymous users and five minutes for signed-in users.
Choose SRT or VTT
Both formats contain timed text, but they serve slightly different workflows:
| Format | Best fit | Main characteristic |
|---|---|---|
| SRT | Video editors and broad platform compatibility | Simple numbered cues with comma-based timestamps |
| VTT | Web video and browser-based players | WebVTT header and period-based timestamps |
Choose the format your editor or publishing platform explicitly supports. Converting between formats later can introduce timing or encoding errors, so exporting the intended format is preferable.
Review subtitle cues
Automated timing is a starting point. Play the source and inspect cues where:
- a sentence crosses a cut or speaker change;
- music or sound effects cover speech;
- a cue is too long to read comfortably;
- names, numbers, or product terms appear;
- two people speak at the same time.
Correct the wording without changing the speaker's meaning. Break long cues at natural phrase boundaries, and keep each cue on screen long enough to read. Subtitle editors can provide reading-speed warnings after import.
Import and verify
Download the selected file, import it into the destination editor, and confirm that the first and last cues align with the video. A platform may shift timing if the edited video has a different opening, speed, or duration from the original Reel.
Keep a copy of the source URL with the project. The copy and download guide explains the alternatives when you need plain text rather than captions.
Rights and retention
Public availability does not grant permission to republish a video or transcript. Use subtitles only where you have the necessary rights. Anonymous results expire within 24 hours and signed-in results within seven days, so download and review required files before expiry.
